Lifespan of UV bulbs?

Hello -

I'm just wondering how long UV bulbs last on average. I've been using my 9w bulb for probably ~ 2 yrs now, maybe a little longer and I just did some filter cleaning and when I hooked everything back up, I noticed the bulb wasn't coming on.

I looked online and even on bigals, replacement bulbs are $27.99 --- ouch! Maybe I'll only run it occasionally from now on.
This is for a 9w Turbo Twist by the way...

I'm not sure how long they last but I've read they lose quite a bit of their intensity after 6 months to a year and should be replaced that often. On the other hand, I have a 25 watt Gamma that I've been using for almost 2 years and haven't replaced the bulb. Not because I doubt it needs to be replaced but because the idea of spending $40 for a new bulb is too painful, lol.
I honestly have never seen much of a difference between using a UV vs not using one. I may not even replace it. Granted, I do regular water changes and I've never kept Discus and haven't had green water for quite some time.
Ge makes a uv bulb for 1/2 the price...

Her is a link on ebay for the 9 watt replacement

Hey thanks for the link. It may be worth it just to have on hand. Instead of having it plumbed inline like the current setup, I could rig up one of those devices that make it portable.
The reason I added one was due to an ich outbreak I brought home from a LFS. I lost half of my fish to ich and most of the plants from the salt I added to treat it so I decided give the UV filter a try.
