is it worth it to go after a cheaper aquarium light. instead of spending more on a fluval or a finnex light, can you get the same plant growth results with a cheaper light company like Hygger or NICREW?

Yes you can grow healthy plants with cheap light. BUT, how your plants and fish look will change greatly with the spectrum they are under. The cost doesn't matter, it's what colors are being reflected off the plants and fish. It can really be dramatic too.

Yep. The really cheap LED fixtures tend to lean quite cool/blue on the color spectrum, often including blue diodes for the nightlight function. They grow plants fine but don't look anywhere near as nice.

that's really interesting. I never thought about how the reflection of the light can make that much of a difference.

Twinstar and kessil are good brands but there are a lot of options. How much light and your budget will determine a lot. As well as required features.

I’ve got 2 planted tanks and a tank with turtles, all different lights, one planted tank is high tech and I use Fluval planted Nano on it, other planted tank is a £15 planted light from proshrimp.com and I have a 90cm nicrew on my turtle tank.

Fluval Nano - good light up to a 30L cube, currently on my 60L cube and it’s just not enough

Nicrew - very bright lights, bought a plug in dimmer/timer for nicrew lights which makes it so much better

£15 light, best light I use to be honest, very bright, adds good colour into the tank, bright enough to hit the substrate on deep-ish tanks

I use Hygger leds on my farm tanks with great results. They are only 12" deep however. They will grow any plant I try. The color spectrum is pretty good also. Seems to be a decent entry level light all in all.
