I have some lava Rock. Was wondering if this ok to put into my canister. Does it need to be boiled or just rinsed well. My pops have some sponge like materials. I think there just small squares of sponge. Would that be better instead of the lava rock. I just took out the carbon out the canister and was looking for something to fill that space. Thanks

That's good to know (after the fact)! I bought some because Eheim's synthetic bio-filter material is far too expensive. They claim it's non-toxic and suitable for freshwater, for what it's worth, but it's ideal to have confirmation.

Ok that's good. I was about to use the lava rock. I had bought awhile back for a large DIY filter. But I found some bio balls and used them instead. I think I read somewhere that bio balls have a greater surface area than lava rocks. Thanks for the answers.
