I have 40lbs of eco-complete and I only need about thirty. Can I plant a 29g solely with eco, or should I add a base layer of laterite? Is there any benefit to laterite with eco?

IMO there's no real benefit to mixing them. Eco is pretty high in iron and has a good CEC on its own.
