I'm contemplating setting up a little Fluval Edge 6 gallon tank to use for DSMing plants. I have a bag of Petco large grain black sand left over, but I was wondering if I should splurge a bit and get aqua soil or something like that from ADA?

Aquasoil is rich in nutrients for a good amount of time and leeches ammonia when first setup to start a fishless cycle.

Search aquasoil on here and you'll find threads on threads on threads about this stuff.

Sand is inert and compacts over time which chokes plant roots.

Sand has no cationic exchange capacity. The better substrates can hold the fertilizer in a way that the plants can get them, acting as a reserve supply.
