Keeping Shrimp out of filter?

1878 Views 15 Replies 9 Participants Last post by  m3ypu
Today I picked up 6 RCS and 2 yellow shrimp (yellow sunkist i think). After about 10 min in the tank 1 of the RCS crawled into my filter (i think he may have gotten back out because he would have had to go through a filter pad first and i didnt see him anywhere in there). How do you guys keep them out? I have the biocube so it has 2 vertical grates that are just big enough for them to fit through. Any help would be apreciated, i would like to get more shrimp if i can, they're very fun to watch (when i can find them!)

I think you have orange sunkist not yellow there are no yellow sunkist if you do have yellows they will interbreed with your rcs.
they are orange sunkist. Will the orange sunkists and rcs interbreed? What is a safe way to attach the sponge to the intake without having to drain the tank?
hhhmmm getting a sponge over the filter intake on a biocube could be a problem. You'd have to tie or wire it to the vents. Let us know how that works out for you :/
Thanks guys, I'm assuming I need a sponge that would be used for a filter?

Something like the above would work.

I personally use the nets that garlic cloves are sold in.

It's goona be hard to put a sponge over them slots but u can try to cut a piece of filter foam or floss and stick it over the slot and if the fiter has a strong enough suction it will stay there. Because it can be easily cleaned if not tied down, if tied to the slots when it gets cloged it's gonna be a pain to clean.

ahh, thanks. Never heard of that before
Check out Skiptons Pet off of mass ave in west roxbury if you haven't already. Decent shrimp stock there, they rotate different species in, and can probably order up for you (talk to Maeve or Anthony). Or you could go on the mass thread on this site, someone locally could be breeding. Overall, unfortunately massachusetts isn't crazy about invertebrates.

If all else fails you could always order online.
Keeping shrimp out of filter

i used some aquatic silicone and some cheap plastic mesh from a pasta strainer
Like you i have a filter thats boxed in with grills on the side
So i just siliconed it over the intake grills
Sponge over intakes didnt work for me, stopped tank filtering,
