Hi i have found that Killi's jump without thinking and also my yesterday added rummy nose tetras get startled when i pass by the tank and leap to their death, out of the tank and onto the floor.
my tank has no space for a lid or glass top, i also dont like the light shining through a wet glass top.
Looking for ideas what i could do, are they any kits to make your own top cover that covers the tank and equipment?
its a small tank about 60x25 cm......for now the top is wrapped with Cling Film.....:)

ideas highly welcomed, thank you!

Marco

There are some DIY and pre-fab kits out there that basically use clear plastic netting with a 1cm x 1cm square grid spacing. That would let light in and keep your fish in the tank as well. You can find them on AliExpress and other sites pretty cheap.

You can have some glass cut and siliconed together to make a permanent or removable "euro brace". You can also do the same thing with a piece of acrylic, but it would look nicer because you can cut a panel to fit the size of your top and then cut out an opening in the middle to allow air/light in. Like this:

The lip should keep most of the fish from jumping out of the tank, since startled fish usually swim away and only jump out when they have nowhere else to go (i.e. when they're up against the glass).

Alternatively, you can lower the water level and maybe look into how to reduce the stress levels of those fish, like adding floating plants, creating more hiding places, reducing light, or increasing their numbers.

My Panchax can't read. But they do stay alive very amazingly after wriggling off 3m across the polished floor. This one (the first) fungused badly but quarantine and gentle increase/decrease salt brought him back and now he's king of the tank. They may look dead but give them a try! And get a lid: mine only jump at feeding time now when at least I can quickly scoop them back in. I think all four have jumped at some stage and I believe that they actually learn as it only happens very infrequently now.
I liked the look of that inset lid: mine is some sort of very light acrilocarbonate looking stuff that I found. Cuts down on topping up heaps too.
