Yes, for the most part they are quite attractive...But why the hype? I personally don't understand striving towards something that's been done 1000x over.

They also don't seem very challenging...

Please feel free to enlighten me in a friendly way :)

Some people like them, some people don't. It's just how it is.

It's like asking why so many people like Apple products, and at the same time, why there are so many people that dislike them. Each side will have their own views.

In the end, the most important thing (and what matters the most) is whether you like it or not :)

Images of iwagumi tanks were what got me into this hobby, and given the popularity of the style, I suspect that is fairly common. I'm emulating that style because it appeals to me. The fact that iwagumi tanks have been done many times before doesn't matter, personally. It hasn't been done in my apartment, so it's new and exciting.

You're quite wrong about that. Classical iwagumi is the most challenging because what looks easy are the minimal elements and any false placement, however slight, will become increasingly aggravating to the viewer. It's difficult for the vast majority of rock arrangements to stand the test of time which is why they are torn down eventually - many sooner than others.
