hey guys,

I have done the soak/dry process with my dirt 3 times and im wondering if i need to do it again.

here is a relatively close shot of the dirt as it sits now. It has changed quite a bit since i first started the mineralize process

Day one:

here it is after 3 soak/dry periods

I'm very new to planted tanks, haven't even set it up yet but I'll tell you about my mineralized soil.

Sorry, I don't have pics.

There was a lot of small sticks in the original soil. I soaked it and scooped out what floated. I spread it out on plastic in the sun and wet it. Once dry I rewet it about 5 times. It turned a lighter gray color and was fine/sand looking but there were more pieces of wood showing.

I sifted it 2 days ago, making a wood frame with chicken wire and a piece of window screen on top. When I put the soil on the screen, it was so fine it immediately fell through the window screen, leaving a lot of wood debris on top.

Mine looked basically like what you have pictured before I sifted it. It also didn't have any smell.
Just sifted it though a window screen and youll be fine and then you can add your clay to it. It looks good have fun good luck with your tank
It's hard to tell if something is fully mineralized without doing certain tests to it, but that certainly looks matured enough to mix and put in your tank after a final sifting. You only want to use the fines without any large particles or bits of wood/bark. If you can I'd also recommend you mix in 30-50% Turface to reduce bulk density and give your plants' roots something bigger to attach to.
When I go with any MTS (mineralized topsoil) substrate I soak and dry 3-4 times, once it's fully dry and ready to move into a tank I mix the topsoil with a bit of Azomite powder, and then with some pre-rinsed Special Kitty: All Natural Kitty Litter which is 100% all natural laterite with a high CEC (cation exchange capacity).

What the kitty litter does is act just like eco-complete, flourite, floramax, etc... which has the capability of soaking up nutrients from the water, and releasing them back to the plants over time.

Azomite is a rich nutrient type of rock that blown out the side of a volcano over 30 million years ago, and as the earth formed the Azomite was exposed to saltwater, freshwater, etc... and gathered many nutrients, see picture below for guaranteed analysis of Azomite.

Azomite is commonly used in aquaculture shrimp farming, agriculture farming, animal feed, because it's known for increasing over all growth size, helps boost the immune systems in animals to fight off infections and parasites....

Once I gave it try I was hooked, I still use a 1/4 teaspoon once a month in every one of my tanks for the fish, shrimp, and plants. But I caution using Azomite because if you use too much, or too soon between doses it can actually start killing your plants, fish, etc.... because you're overloading the tank with too many, and too high amounts of nutrients.

What percentage of kitty litter do you use? That's a great idea. I use it to plant my lilies and lotus in my pond.

I've never heard of the Azomite but I'm going to try it in the tank and my veggie garden.

Thanks!

I would cover the glass bottom with special kitty all natural kitty litter, then I'd spread some Dolomite, and high yield muriate of potash on top of the kitty litter. Then I'd mix in 30% of a 20lb bag of the natural kitty litter with the mineralized topsoil, the natural kitty litter is used because it has a high CEC for gathering nutrients, and releasing them at a later time back into the water.

So the kitty litter would act as a sponge to soak up nutrients, and keep the mineralized topsoil supplied with nutrients.
Thanks!
