i made a cheap filter using a water bottle, powerhead, and a sponge. Air started accumulating in it. I think it's CO2 from aerobic bacteria in the sponge. But I don't know, it could be methane or something. Thoughts?

It used to look like the first image, but after a day, the air bubble expanded to include almost the whole inside of the water bottle. Pump still works though.

Highly unlikely that the bacteria would be generating that much CO2. If anything, it is likely just air bubbles that are introduced by the powerhead that are accumulating into a larger bubble.
