I've been running my Fluval 305 in my shrimp tank for months with no problems. It has mechanical filtration in the bottom tray and bio media on top. Middle tray is empty. Recently I've heard that some types of chemical filtration can help out with algae outbreaks, although I don't know the science behind this claim, or which product(s) to use.

Any thoughts?

I dont use chemical filtration at all and have never had adverse effects. If you have discoloration or odors sometimes you can just hang a bag of carbon in the tank for a week and get rid of that kind of thing but otherwise I consider it worthless.

I don't use chemical filtration either, and everything seems fine. I would rather use the extra space saved and place some more media for biofiltration and/or mechanical filtration.

Also, I don't see how chemical filtration could help out with algae outbreaks.
