Went on a walk in the woods today, saw a lot of neat weathered pine branches and roots. Is pine wood okay to use in a planted tank? Or are the oils and chemicals that give it it's distinct smell going to be a problem to fish/plants?

No softwood is the general rule. Stick to hardwood if you aren't sure.

Pine if a softwood. General consensus is too stick to hard woods in the aquarium.

I have pine stumps/root structure in both of my tanks. However, they have been submerged at the bottom of a flooded river for over 100 years. I have never had problems with them ever effecting my tanks nor have they decayed any. But I would not attempt a branch off a once living of still living tree.
