Do you think the sharp, spiky features of Malaysian driftwood can be dangerous to fish, specifically a long-finned betta? Is it necessary to inspect and sand it, or does it soften up once waterlogged?
Another option if you are not adding fish right away is to plant it fairly heavily. Once it's covered in moss or other plants the sharper edges won't be accessible anymore. It will also break down and smooth out over time, but that is very long term with plenty of shrimp chewing on it.
I've included Malaysian driftwood in many of my tanks for years. Not once have I ever seen a fish harm themselves on it. If you like it, use it. And trust that your fish aren't suicidal.
