I'm thinking about having Killifish in my 30 gal, but that is going to require adding a lid to my tank.

I have the canopy that came with my tank, however it's a plastic unit with a glass strip just barely wider than my light itself; as a result, when I place the light on the legs on top of the glass, the plastic portions of the canopy drastically cut the light to the front and rear of the tank.

I'm wondering if it's safe for me to rest the Ray 2 directly on the glass, without the legs? This would keep the light nearly level with the rest of the hood, and let the light spread farther front-back.

I know that while this would be unsafe with conventional lighting, LEDs run quite cool and I'm under the impression that the metal casing of the Ray 2 serves to radiate any heat. Would heat be an issue if the unit were resting directly on the glass?

Yup! LED run very cool. You shouldn't have any problem with laying it on the glass

I gutted the stock hood light housing to fit an Ray2 in. Works great, but I had to modified (cut) the Ray2's wire work it with the stock switch (voiding the warranty).

I'm using a Planted+ now. Great light.

I think you should double check this with Lowe.

Turns out there's a bit of a lip around the glass, so I ended up with about 3/4" clearance under the light anyway. Seems to work well.

I still lose a bit of light, but I think I had a bit too much for my setup to begin with.

You could ditch the plastic top and go with glass. Better use of the lighting. I don't have a finnex but I rest my 36" LED right on the glass lid.

The only issue ive had with glass lids is that the rubber hinge generally runs down the center length of the glass so the light will have to be shifted forward or back to circumvent that.

I took mine off and am running lidless because of this.
