is it ok to remove the acrylic top of a 55 gallon acrylic tank?


well i bought a tank and its all acrylic and there is a acrylic top thats glue to the tank see picture below...


so i as is it ok to remove it? as the hole that was cut on top is way to small and i would like an open top...

That's the reason I'm getting rid of my standard acrylic tanks.

The factory cutouts have always been a huge negative in my opinion.

  • There's absolutely NO way you can remove the top without destroying the tank.
  • Acrylic BENDS when it's filled with water.
  • If you eliminate the top, the whole thing will burst on you.

If you want the rimless look, the safest route is glass.

+1 to MGS's post.

Looks similar to my tank for my build. I cut out the smaller strip between the large openings and "slots" on the back to make a more open top, but would not recomend cutting much more out.

i see what you mean and remove = bow or kaboom... or leave it on and deal with the ugly cap and still own an aquarium...


i'll just deal with the cap on then... lol thanks for the quick replys i almost took it off xD

Those acrylic tanks are super clear to look though...... but Be real care-full when cleaning that acrylic tank, as just normal cleaning can cause small sand paper type scratch's that multiply after each cleaning ........ good luck on your new tank.
