Is bark a bad thing?

Hi there
I've got a couple of pieces of "Old man walking stick". I think it is in the willow family, but I'm not sure. Should the bark be removed before using it in the tank? The bark is thin and hard to get if off the wood.
Thanks

(Any kind of) bark will rot and pollute the water inside your aquarium, so it has to be removed.

As for Willow, I am not sure if it is safe.
Respectfully, I beg to differ...I have seen numerous aquascapes that successfully utilize bark. One example can be found here: Mysterious Bermuda

There are others on the site linked above if you look around. Look at the layout for "Dancing Wood," and "A Tree's Life,":

very interesting.. that bark was treated with hydrogen peroxide.

quick Q: .. where's the fish?

First link does not work.

It is interesting to note that the second link links to several aquascapes that use wood with bark still on them.

I wonder how long the aquascapes are set up for; surely the bark on the wood, if let up to its own devices, would rot relatively quickly.
@ Darkblade: First link is just the first aquascape listed when you click through on the second link. Interestingly, both "A Tree's Life" and "Mysterious Bermuda" use bark only - no wood. I know one on the journals purports to use some python git to treat the wood before insertion into the tank, but nothing beyond that.

As far as how long they've been setup...I dont know. Most of these tanks are created to compete in the annual IAPLC (and many have placed in the top 20 in recent years). I suspect that each tank is functional for at least 4 months to a year.

@J-P: Most of the setup narratives have links you can click through to see the tank once finally setup and fully operational. Usually the fish show up in these pictures, as the fish are an accent to the planted layout vs the other way around.

As for the first, Mysterious Bermuda, the completion pictures can be found HERE

Truly. They have some great stuff on the CAU website. Definitely worth poking around on...

First link does not work.
It just doesn't take you directly to the picture. Try this one.
Bark is bad if it's backed up with some large canine teeth.
Otherwise.........it can last depending on what type, cork has about 4-10 years life span.
