Hi,
I have a 220 liter (60 gal) tank with an internal sump.
3 chambers: 1. Floss (soon adding sponge) 2. Matrix biomedia 3. Heater, UV Filter, Return Pump

What would be an effective maintenance plan?
How, when, and how often to clean/replace the media? return pump cleaning?
Additional tips?

Pull the floss and sponge once a week, rinse them then return them to the sump. This will remove the debris BEFORE it has a chance to break down into Nitrates.

Replace the mechanical media after it has been washed so many times that it doesn't really perform its function properly any more.

Once a year pull everything and clean the accumulated gunk out of the bottom of the sump. Wash the pump at the same time. Pull the impeller and wash out all of the built up gunk. Gently rinse the accumulated gunk off the bio media.
