Recently at a Petsmart near me, they had a tank on clearence. It was a Marineland branded tank setup with the stand and cheap led lights. Its measurements are 36x18x21. Never seen a tank with dimensions like that before. It says it's a 53 gallon, but not sure about that.

Sounds pretty much like a 55 gallon deep or wide IMO. I currently have a regular 55 gallon tall setup and I am considering trading it out for this tank. What do you guys think?

Hi Blackheart,

I have seen that tank set up in a LFS and it is a nice size for aquascaping because it has a good length to depth ratio and it isn't so deep that getting light to the substrate is an issue. Aqueon makes a 50 gallon that is 36.4" x 18.4" x 19" tall that may cost a little less.

I tracked down Mr Aqua rimless 36 x 18 x 20 in 10mm low iron at LFS 150 mi from me. Driving there to check it out today. $400 for tank only.

Same footprint as a 65G just 3 inches shorter. So the 53G's sounds about right without taking a calculator to it. I got my 65G for $100 for just the tank. Honestly, the 21" height would be great. It's a bugger to do anything in the lower back of that 65G.

I recently fell in love with the 56 gallon size that PetsMart sells as a complete set (30" x 18" x 24"H) but I wasn't so in love with all the garbage they sell with it so I ordered just the tank through my LFS instead as they carry Marineland tanks, among others. I'd suggest you consider doing the same, as those pressed board stands those setups come with are garbage. You could probably still get the tank for a bit less than that by going through other suppliers rather than getting the set with a bunch of extras you'll probably end up replacing eventually anyway.

I used to have the 56 setup and honestly, some of the stands weren't that bad. They might be particle board, but they seem to hold up better than you would think. Never had an issue with their stands. The stand on the 56 when I had it was just fine.

I actually came across one of these at my LFS today. Not a bad sized tank. It was only 116 dollars for the tank itself. 53 breeder she called it. Not for me though. I like my standard 55 tall. I'm not crazy about the depth of it just like everyone else, but I love how long it is so my fish can have plenty of space to zoom back and forth.

I'd love to have one except for the biggest tank I'm allowed is a 55-65 gallon setup :(
Hi Blackheart,

If you remove the label before you get home will she be able to determine the capacity? lol
