How do I ensure the connection between my canister output and reactor are water tight?

For info the canister is a fluval with the ribbed hosing which has a pretty snug fit onto the reactor but I suspect that it won't be watertight.

Put a bucket under the connection and turn on the filter, be ready to pull the plug if water starts dripping. If you can't fit a bucket under the connection, put several paper towels under it. Paper towels will indicate dripping very quickly. Quick enough that you shouldn't make a puddle before you notice. I would keep a paper towel under it for a few days and keep an eye on it.

also make sure you use some type of hose clamp. No matter how tight, hoses seem to pop off at the most inconvinient times.
