ID by any chance?

I got this from a local guy, he forgot what it was. Apparently it's a tetra, lays eggs like a cichlid on a leaf etc, guarding them for a day or so until eating or abandoning them.

I thought they were interesting, so I picked them up. Unfortunately I don't love having fish I don't know the name of, so I'm looking for the off chance someone knows this.

That is no tetra. Tetras have 4 unpaired fins (which is where they got their name from).
Looks more like a killifish.

The head looks like a pencilfish of some sort.

Tetras have a small adipose fin between the tail and dorsal fin, as Nordic mentioned. I agree with HSakhi on the killi, looks like a member of the Aphyosemion genus.
I'm thinking its in the Pyrrhulina species, which depending on where you read (Internet vs books) is a pencil fish or tetra. A quick Google search will yield several different pictures of fish that look similar, but all have different names.

Thanks for the help.
Take a look at Copella , also . Similar to Pyrrhulina but maybe not so common . Certainly NOT an Aphyosemion .

The only reason I did not think Copella was when he bought them they said "closely related to splashing tetras but not the same"

Thinking possibly Pyrrhulina brevis
IIRC there's Copellas that aren't splash tetras , but your guess of P. brevis is probably as good as any of us are going to do .

Yep, if that's not what they are, that's what they are for now to me.

Appreciate the help
