I noticed today that one of my harlequin raspboras has a few white spots on him. He has been in the tank close to a month and was fine until recently. I have not noticed anything on my other harlequins or rummy nose tetras. Everyone is eating and swimming normally. I do not have a quarantine tank setup.

What are my options for treatment? This is the first time I have dealt with this and I am still new to the hobby. The tank is about 80% planted with a few nerite snails in addition to the fish previously mentioned. It is a 20 gallon long with an aquaclear 30 and 50 running if that matters. Temps are set to 78 but can drop as low as 76 over night. I dose seachem equilibrium, phosphorus, potassium and kno3 once a week (kn03 is done on a separate day from the rest). I do 5 gallon water changes every other week in addition to toping off what evaporates, but recently it has been more like 5 gallons per week since I am battling some algae. The tank is still relatively new as it was set up towards the end of January.

Use Kordon Ich Attack (not to be confused with Kordon Rid Ich). Gentlist ich treatment I know of and it's safe for plants and snails/shrimp.

I have been slowing raising the temp in my tank till the heater is set to 86. The tank has not warmed up that high yet, but from what I was reading I am hoping this will help. Not sure if I should add aquarium salt since I have rummy nose tetras

I like heat treatments for Ich. What I've done with success is slowly raise the tank temp to about 90 degrees. Then keep it there for 10 days after you last notice any white spots on the fish. dont worry about what your heater is set to so much as the temp of the water!

Thanks, water temp on my cheap stick to the side of the tank thermometer is still showing 80. I have an Eheim heater and it is definitely running. Hopefully the temps will pick up.

Another vote for temp treatment. I'd normally go with 90 degrees but 95 - 100 for discus, angels, and other warmer water fish, with an airstone and good surface agitation to keep as much oxygen in the water as possible.

I have had the heater set to 90 to try and get it above 84 for the last 2 days but the tank does not seem to want to heat above that.ni have an eheim 100 w currently. The tank has a glad lid and a stingray led. Any suggestions for getting the temp up?

Apparently posting here did the trick, at 87 currently.

I'm glad I found this forum. I was rearranging my tank today and noticed a couple spots on fins of a few of my fish. I am slowly raising the tank up to 86 and adding some salt. I went to pick up some Kordon Ich Attack, but they were sold out. I wound up picking up some Herbtana instead. I just recently got my aquarium set up after years of not having one and haven't had to deal with ich and plants before.

Increasing temp to the upper 80s will help, in the end, it depends if the fish make through it.

Combine with keeping the tank dark for a day or 2... the little ich buggers do their swimming in the dark.
