If you do happen to go with an AC 20/30 you could add a sponge to the intake acting as a prefilter. Then, with some creative cutting, take a sponge that is the width of the output, and 1/4" or so thicker than the distance between the inside wall of the tank and the back of outlet. Cut out one corner of the spunge so it looks similar to a stair step. Squeeze the top step between the wall and filter allowing the outflow to flow onto the other step going into the sponge before the tank and reducing the agitation caused by the waterfall effect of the HOB.

As, I see in your first post you have a HOB filter. You could try adding the sponges to that filter and see how it works out.

I've ran HOB's for a long time, I just never did anything to improve them. I've been on a big diy kick for the last year thanks to this site.

Would any dollar store sponge work? I would love to build a spillway and grow some fissdens or something in it. I'm going to the lfs tonight to see if he has the ac20 or marina instock. I know I can get a better deal online, but I like giving this store business. They treat me right and he always hooks me up on plants when I go in.

A block of course sponge from your LFS should suffice, as well as other types of sponges assuming they do not contain any chemicals. It is after all just a diffuser. Only caution I would take is just make the sure the sponge is course enough for the water to flow in to it rather than hit it and just run off before it goes through the sponge. Some people like the large yellow sponge for washing a car. Seems some dollar stores have these in stock.

I use a coarse blue sponge sold for pond filters or sumps.
It has very coarse cells so the water flows through it easily enough. It gets darker with use, or you could look for a black one.
I have not put anything in the path of the HOB filters. When the water level is correct they sheet across the surface of the water and are diffused when they hit the front of the tank.
I have kept several Bettas like that, and they do fine.

I would have to place this one going across the tan side to side. My wife just hates the sounds of running water. I had to switch all my tanks to canister filter when we moved. I ran a AC50 on my 55g without issue for years. I just wasn't sure if placing a hob on the side would give me proper flow throughout the entire tank. Guess I can test it.

I put the filter together yesterday afternoon. I ditched the carbon and doubled up the media. I stuck it on my 29g to get the media going. 24 hours later and the 29g looks cleaner than it ever has. Now i can just use the eheim for flow on the hairgrass. Its staying on the 29g and I will be buying another for the 10g.
