I ran an XP1 on my own 10gal betta tank.

But then, I had an HMPK so no long finnage to worry about; flow was pretty strong.

An AC 30 with a sponge prefilter would probably be a good choice. I personally love the Fluval Edge mechanical sponges as prefilters on AC intakes: http://www.bigalspets.com/edge-pre-filter-sponge.html

a few snails.

All snails do is eat and poop all day. IMO they're your culprit.
