There sure is. I'm starting up a 75G tank with MTS by using my backyard soil. (make sure there's not any fertilizers being spread)
I also have heard of people using topsoil that is sifted. If you go that route find a nice organic topsoil that doesn't contain manure or fertilizer of any kind and Mineralize that or some even use it straight, with a cap of sand or other substrate over it.
