Hypothetical

Just a hypothetical question here but ...

If a buyer finds a seller who is willing to cheat eBay out of their fees to make a special deal with him ...

And that buyer winds up being cheated by that same seller in that very same deal ...

Should that buyer be surprised?

AND ... Should we feel sorry for him when he whines about it?

Just a hypothetical question...

nope. I've dealt with ebay as a buyer and seller many times. Lots of people want to dodge actually using ebay to save on fees and such. I've never dealt outside ebay in fear of getting screwed.
I was always told "anyone that will lie for you, will lie to you"

So, anyone who wants you to cheat someone will cheat you if they get the chance
Why not just post this in the thread you are clearly referring to?
Well, that's why those fees exist. eBay provides a service in making sure you don't get screwed.
Macclellan: That's a good question and I'm really glad that someone understood that my hypothetical question was caused by something ... and didn't just pop into my head out of the blue.
My answer? ... it is probably because it wouldn't be "polite" to point the finger quite so blatantly. I'm aware of the fact that I am quite the "pompous a$$" when it comes to things like this. I hate that I appear to have my "holier-than-thou" halo on when in fact we all (me included) do things that we are not very proud of.
It's just that, more and more, it's obvious that some (many?) of us are not ashamed/regretful/unhappy that they have done so, they advertise or brag about the fact that they lied/cheated/stole, they are unhappy that they got caught/screwed/gypped, and they want others to commiserate with them about their unhappiness.
It seems that, in U.S. society today, "doing wrong" isn't the crime/sin, it's "getting caught" ... and this lack of "shame" is the sad part of this whole scenario.

Ok ... Rant over ... Moderators - deleting this or moving it to general chat is probably a good idea. Please do so if you think it appropriate. Thanks.

In this case, the post may serve a purpose - to notify the community that a particular vendor seems to engage in some shady business practices. I doubt I'd buy from said vendor, having read that.
Granted, most of the time (and this time too) it is also a 'feel sorry for me' and 'doesn't this suck.'
John, maybe you could have posted in the thread and gotten the gist of your point across in a tactful way such that there'd be no finger pointin.' That might not fit your Dukish style tho. ;)
mac ... well, you're right, there's no tact in the way I do things, and at this late date that's probably not going to change.

For the 100 ebaY deals I've done over the years, I also did 100 "side" deals where I develop a rapport with a person by email then I do the deal. Generally you can only do "side" deals with lower volume buyers/sellers since the people who make a regular living on ebaY simply can't spare the time and focus to monitor their "side" deals. Ironically over the years I've actually gotten screwed MORE by the ebaY commissioned deals then the "side" deals. "side" dealing is also better when you know you will be returning to ebaY to repurchase, for instance I buy brewers yeast for my DIY Co2 about once per year from the same guy on the "side" and save myself an additional 10%. Maybe I'm just lucky that so far I have avoided crooks and swindlers, or maybe I can sense them coming at me... who knows.
Hey John,

I'm sure glad you live in a perfect world and has a perfect life. Unfortunately not all of us are lucky enough to have that luxury. We work hard everyday and have this little hobby on a side just to enjoy life and chill out after that long hard day at work. We appreciate every single penny we earn and try to get the best deal money can buy.

Not every decision we made are right and not every sellers on Ebay are scumbag. But s*&^ happens.

Opinions are like a$$hole........the only different is some are bigger than others.

Live and learn.
As I said earlier ...
I'm aware of the fact that I am quite the "pompous a$$" ... we all (me included) do things that we are not very proud of.
I'm very aware of my shortcomings.

And the point of this thread was to explore the breadth of feeling regarding "avoid the rules, just don't get caught", not to point fingers at any individual ...
Some who have replied on this thread have said its perfectly ok, others have said it's not.

ergo
it seems that, in U.S. society today, "doing wrong" isn't the crime/sin, it's "getting caught" ... and this lack of "shame" is the sad part of this whole scenario.
Anyone who remembers the Dan Quayle/Murphy Brown brouhaha certainly agree that standards in the U.S. have changed. Whether that is good or bad is open to discussion and depends on how you learned to think/believe what you think/believe.

AND ... having absolutely nothing to do with any of this ...

A few(?) years ago, I realized that I was getting old when the teenage daughter of a friend of mine said to her mother "Did you know that Paul McCartney was in a group before Wings?" The mom and I just looked at each other, shocked, and I began to feel old.

Undoubtedly, I am again showing my age (sigh) as I'm sure there are those here saying "whats Wings? ... Paul who?" but c'est la vie.

Why is this thread in the equipment section???

Entertaining read tho.I blame it all on the MTV:)
Mott: it was loosely tied to another thread here in the equipment section but I did ask (post 6) for it to be deleted/moved if the mods thought that was appropriate. I assume that one of them will get around to moving it in due time.

done :)
If I broke the rules and got burned, I doubt I'd confess it in public, much less whine about the ordeal in public.

It reminds me of all of those news quips lately dealing with people calling the police because their marijuana stash got stolen.
