Go to any college area bookstore and pay cash for any of the alternate lifestyle plant growing guides. ;-) Buying a guide book and a MH light for your aquarium probably wouldn't be a good one stop purchase.
My local public library stocks this one:
The hydroponic hot house : low-cost, high-yield greenhouse gardening
by James B. DeKorne.
I would expect, but haven't looked at the catalogs, that most public libraries in CA have guides to hydroponic systems of some sort. UCLA's library catalog shows seven hits on the word hydroponic.
Since it gets a bit cold in Michigan in the winter, I looked into small scale hydro for salads. One of these was listed in an article in the NY Times. I don't remember which as I didn't pay attention as I bookmarked them.
