I have never unplugged my hydor inline when I worked on my tank. In fact, I never even thought about doing that. The only time I unplug it is when I turn my filter off for extended periods of time, but even then the company said it should be able to last a while without the filter on and not burn out. I just don't want to find out where that point is.
