Will this work or would I have to upgrade to the 300 Watt model? (200 watt is only recommended for up to 53 gallon, but just wondering if I can push it). I have an XP3 filter.

As you live in freezing BC, I'd go with a 300 watt.

Even though Vancouver has mild winters compared to a lot of places I'd still recommend going with the 300W model. Why take any chances with your fish and plants?

What is the room temperature normally? Does it go down at night? If your room temperature stays in the mid 70's, it might work. Why not try it for a few hours? That being said, I use a 300 watt on a 46 gallon because, the room temperature in the basement will go into the sixties mid winter.

It depends on your room tempreature. The Hydor heaters are great, and the 200W might work, although it might be on all the time if your room temperature is much lower than your desired tank temp.
