i saw someone elses post about their shrimp being lethargic. how would you describe this. also how would you describe the ideal shrimp behavior. is it normal for them to be very stationary or should they be moving and swimming around a lot?

My shrimps don't swim around unless some lady shrimps have just undressed, most of the time they just graze on whatever surface (substrate, moss, tank glass, sponge filter, lava rocks, ... etc). Shrimps will "rest" a few times a day, from a few minutes to maybe an hour, but if they like the environment they should be moving around most of the time.

happy shrimp are in constant motion. They are eating while crawling around on the ground, then hop up onto the glass, eat there, then go down to a moss, and eat there.

Sad shrimp stay in one place and just breathe (you can see their gills moving where their "mouth" should be). These are shrimp that are stressed out and are conserving energy. Lots of things cause this, it's just a sign of general malaise. Could be parameters, could be ammonia, could be temperature, etc. Something that helps immediately is adding an airstone to the aquarium (especially if you see the fast breathing).
