I will be using John Innes No. 3 compost

as I saw recommended on here with this on top http://www.wickes.co.uk/invt/154051

How much of each would you recommend and would it be good enough?

Thanks

1 and 1/2 inches of dirt and about an inch of cap has worked good for me
Great thanks, any idea how long the dirt will be beneficial to the plants for? and is there anything else I could add to the dirt to improve the quality of it and make it last longer?

Thanks
The lable say's "farmyard manure". I don't think I would use it. I'm still kinda new to this. Maybe someone else can explain why not to use this. Ammonia I think.

I saw that recommended in another thread on here a little while ago buy who I think was a very in the know member......... personally I have no idea lol

If anyone can clear this up it would be great!

Thanks

From what I have seen, dirt looses its kick after a couple years, but it still continues to grow plants great, albeit, at a slightly lower rate. But the thing about dirt is it continues to use nutrients from fish waste so it never really stops being beneficial to plants. I have seen tanks set up well over five years with the same dirt, and the growth has barely slowed. I don't know if there is anything that will make the dirt last longer, but red clay is extremely beneficial to add to the dirt to give the plants iron.

And I don't know about the dirt your using, but that person in the link you gave seems to have success with it.
Great, thanks for your help.
