I have a Hagen Nutrafin DIY CO2 system set-up in my 20 gallon, and I'm still using the ladder that came with the system. I'm wondering if it would be worth it to shell out $5 for the glass diffuser especially if it does a better job of diffusing my CO2. The ladder is inconsistent in terms of diffusing the CO2. Plus, it takes up a lot of space on my back wall. Would anyone recommend going with the smaller glass diffuser?

Is there any difference between just using a ceramic diffuser vs a ceramic glass diffuser?

Ive attempted this and the nutrafin bottle's threads are very coarse and will not hold the pressure. If you want to use a glass diffuser you would need something stronger.

The ceramic is the disc in the middle the rest of the diffuser is glass.

What are my options then in terms of using something smaller and more effective?

The cheapest one i could find on ebay with a nub that goes into the suction cup as part of the glass. some of the other ones have suction cups that clip on. I think it was $8 for a two pack shipped from hong kong.

OK, I see now. You used a glass diffuser with a ceramic plate and just buried part of the diffuser in the gravel. I'd love to use a glass diffuser, but it appears that my Hagen system won't be able to supply enough pressure to diffuse the CO2 through this type of diffuser. I think I made just end up using the Hagen Elite Mini-Filter instead when I can spare the $15 to get one off Amazon.

Just use a Swan cigarette filter in the end of the tube - steady stream of super fine bubbles

Which ones specifically? Regular? Extra slim? Slimline?

I would reccommend at least upgrade from the ladder to the ceramic disk. That being said, I think you can do even better using an inline atomizer or building a simple reactor yourself. Won't be $5 but it'll be worth it.

Are any of these real options for DIY CO2?
