How to trim needle leaf java fern?

Ok, I have seen some really neat and nice looking clusters of needle leaf java fern. I suppose they just trim it by cutting the longer leaves back? Is this how its done or do they just pluck the longer leaves completely. Thanks!

You cut the leave completely off at the rhizome.
