get a piece of plywood and hang the plywood with the retrofit kit attached inside the canopy?
or even easier just add a piece of 2x4 inside?

That sounds like the right direction for me. Hopefully lowering the lights just a bit will help heat dissipate as well.It is easy to lower an AH Supply light - just use spacers or stand-offs behind the reflector. I have used pieces of wood, pieces of metal tubing, and washers to do that. A T5HO retrofit kit can be mounted the same way, or it can have the reflector held by the bulbs. For the latter, I'm not sure how to lower it.
I am not sure what to expect when my canopy comes. I've never owned one. I assume that the underside of the top cover will simply be unfinished wood in the interior. How do people typically screw into the underside of the top to attach the fixtures? Simply drill and screw, or is an anchor used? I can't imagine the lights are particularly heavy, but it would really suck if a fixture fell into the water as it could kill the fish and ruin a bunch of gear!A T5HO retrofit kit can be mounted the same way, or it can have the reflector held by the bulbs
