how to suspend lights 2-4 inches below the canopy

Hello all-

I am getting ready to suspend a T5HO and 2 AHS fixtures in my new wooden canopy. I've never done a retrofit before.

It would be great to lower the AHS lights about 4 inches, and maybe lower the Catalina T5HO about 2 inches. Is there an easy way to do this? It was recommended that I build little wooden braces out of 1 x 1 wood, but I thought maybe there were extender brackets or something.

Any advice much appreciated! thanks, Dave

get a piece of plywood and hang the plywood with the retrofit kit attached inside the canopy?

or even easier just add a piece of 2x4 inside?
It is easy to lower an AH Supply light - just use spacers or stand-offs behind the reflector. I have used pieces of wood, pieces of metal tubing, and washers to do that. A T5HO retrofit kit can be mounted the same way, or it can have the reflector held by the bulbs. For the latter, I'm not sure how to lower it.

That sounds like the right direction for me. Hopefully lowering the lights just a bit will help heat dissipate as well.

A piece of metal tubing and a well chosen washer on either end of it seems like a simple approach that would work well and be easy. If I'm understanding, I would simply attach the fixture to the wood using a screw, as usual, but use a 3-4 inch screw and stick the tube/washer spacer between the light and the wood. Simple!

I didn't quite understand this comment, but the meaning will be apparent when I see the actual fixture.

I am not sure what to expect when my canopy comes. I've never owned one. I assume that the underside of the top cover will simply be unfinished wood in the interior. How do people typically screw into the underside of the top to attach the fixtures? Simply drill and screw, or is an anchor used? I can't imagine the lights are particularly heavy, but it would really suck if a fixture fell into the water as it could kill the fish and ruin a bunch of gear!

on mine I just had like 1/8-1/4" screws going through the housing into the hood lid.

did it across the length so it dispersed the weight.

one thing to keep in mind with suspending it inside the hood is that the light would be in the way and make servicing the tank a chore.
