I'm planning on an aquascape that has sand in the foreground and plants towards the back. Do I need to have some partitions so prevent the sand from going into the soil? Thanks!

Yes, you will definitely need some kind of partition. You can use thin plastic (from pop bottles or the like).

A cool method that I've always wanted to try but haven't yet is to shape the outline of the aqua soil with potters clay I think (some sort of clay) then bake it and place it in the tank! That way it will fit exactly how you want and you won't have to worry about any if the partitions moving out of place

yeah youre gonna need some partitions. either rocks or use some corrugated plastic sheets (you can find them at homedepot)
