How to open the Eheim 2213 without it overflowing

Does anyone know the proper way to turn off the Eheim 2213 and open it? Whenever I want to clean it out, I turn it off, open up the canister and it overflows.

Anyone know how to open the canister without it overflowing?

Do you have the quick disconnects?

If so, here's how I do it:

1. Shut off the filter.
2. Close all 4 disconnect valves.
3. Unscrew the disconnects and remove the filter from the cabinet.
4. Open top valve.
5. Open bottom valve and drain some water out into a container.
6. Close bottom valve.
7. Undo clasps and remove top of filter.

Do you have valves installed? Close your valves first, then disconnect everything. I would then take it somewhere where you can open the valves back up to release the internal pressure then open it up.

I do have the valves installed. But when I close the valves to disconnect and open up the canister, theres a lot of pressure keeping the lid on the canister.

So after I close the valves, I have to pour the water somewhere?

Wait, I need to drain a bit of the water from the canister b4 I disconnect? Sorry, I'm just a bit confused as to how I should tackle this thing.
After you close the valves, you should disconnect the hoses from the canister filter via quick disconnect. A little water comes out doing this so a wrap a rag around the hose as I pull it out. After the hoses are disconected, take the whole thing outside or to a bathtube, THEN open up the unit and clean it.
To continue from other posters: once you have the filter disconnected and have taken it to where you wish to empty it, twist the intake J tube downward so that it will pour into your sink, bathtub...etc; next open the quick disconnect valve from the outlet hose before lastly opening the quick disconnect valve from the inlet hose. The water should now quickly flush from the filter. Once the filter has drained, you can then remove the filter head to gain access to your media basket. Always make sure when you return the head to the filter that you seat the red rubber gasket properly. Hope this helps.
what are quick disconnects? do you mean the clamp nuts? like the things that can shut off the flow of water? the valves?

is the quick disconnect something that doesnt come in the box?
When I bought my 2213, it came with the quick disconnects (as Epic posted the link to).

Without these (one on each line), water will flow whenever you open the top.
To further clarify, each "quick disconnect" valve should have 2 pieces piggybacked together. After you turn off both valves, you unscrew the thumbscrew between them, and then the two pieces pull apart (where a tiny bit of water drips out as ValorG mentioned). Maybe you didn't realize that they come apart?
oh swow. i definitely did not know that. thanks so much!
