How to create best circulation

Just looking for opinions on where to place a powerhead and where to point it. I have a 55 gallon planted tank running an aqua clear 100 with a skimmer attached. It's on the left hand side of the tank with the intake / skimmer about six inches from the left corner of the tank. I was running an aqueon 950 on the right side of the tank (more towards the front half, about ¾ of the way up the tank and pointed towards the surface) but it's much too strong for plants so I'm going to be downsizing. So here's what I need :
1) which powerhead to go with. LFS sells aqueon and fluval.
2) where to place it to get best circulation. I was noticing some debris gathering right under the powerhead wall last time but I'm wondering if it would be better to place in the same area but instead point it down? or maybe place it lower and still point up? I pointed up because I was still getting some sludge on the surface but have since got the skimmer so that should also help with that.
THANKS in advance :)

Also, I'm not dosing with CO2 so surface agitation doesn't matter. I do daily dosing with flourish excel and that keeps my plants more than happy.
