How To Clean Substrate?

The question I have is how do you go about cleaning the substrate in a densely planted tank?The rear corner of my 12g has rotala(10-15 stems)with roots galore.Should I try & direct some water flow there.

with just a 12gl, I'd get a turkey baster and just kinda... blow around in the "dead spot" once in a while to get the junk up in the water column while you're doing water changes. (make sure you don't use the turkey baster for anything else ever) This is what I do with my mosses occassionally in my 45gl.
