Are we talking about driftwood that's been collected or like malaysian driftwood? I found the malaysian driftwood to be hard to break apart. The best bet is with a saw when it comes to them, as they are very tough in the center (it jammed a circle saw and I had to saw it by hand).

The tag said Penang driftwood. I kind of suspected that it was not going to be easy. Thanks for answering Hamsterman. :)
