How thick is the bottom of 10 gallon tanks, 1/4"?

Is it possible to use this stuff, with some aquarium cement and silicone to make a cheap 3 or 5 gallon cube? How would I need to treat the edges of the glass and exactly where do I get (or how do I make) trim/braces for it, at least the corners?

You could just tear apart a 10 gallon during the $1 gallon sale. I bought a few to tear apart for lids. It's not tempered. You score it in one continuous motion and snap it. Edge finishing is as simple as running some emery cloth to smooth the edges. Put it on a black to keep the edges square.
