i just came home with some rotala indica. it came with a lead thing around it to hold it together and keep it down. so i take it off. im supposed to take it off right?? i spread the stems out about .5 to 1 cm apart. i stick them in the gravel about an inch. they float out!!! and when i get a few to stay down, the next one pops the rest out! i'm new to this planted tank stuff but it seems so silly that i cant even get the stems to stay in the gravel...

Ah, right. you only have one anchor.

You can stick it deep down in the substrate or bury the lowest layer of leaves underneath. Some of it will rot, but once the roots grow out, you'll be set.

ok i'll leave em with the anchor for a few. now the bottom 2-3 inches of each stem has no leaves or roots. will new leaves grow on the nodes?

I always remove the lower leaves. Leaving about 2" of stem, and just plant them. works good for me.

Roots will grow from the nodes.
