How often to change drop checker fluid?

I haven't run into a limit on the time you can keep that fluid going. Instead, I get a thin layer of algae on the drop checker sides, which looks bad, so I take it out, clean it and replace the fluid while I'm working on it. That has been 2 to 3 week intervals so far. It looks like the indicator dye will eventually fade, but I haven't noticed it doing so.

I just change mine around the same time as Hoppy does but I don't get any algae.
