How often do I replace Osmocote?

The title pretty much says it all; how often should I replace Osmocote Plus root tabs for my planted tanks? I remember it being about every 4 to 6 months, but I can't remember so I am not sure. I am also not sure if I should follow the replacement instructions on the back of the package since it was written for potted and other terrestrial plants. If it is about ever 4-6 months than I definitely need to do it; it has been way longer than that.

I dont think anyone can give you a specific answer exactly how long they last. You'll get opinions based on personal experience, anywhere from 2-3 months to 6 months plus. The type of substrate probably plays a role too, high cec vs low, etc

Ive used them a lot in several different tanks, all with inert sand substrate. My personal opinion is they're good for at least 6 months. ymmv

Do the plants still look good, growing well? If yes then dont worry about it. If not then it may be time

The plants do seem to have slowed down a bit, that is why I am wondering.
Last time I pulled a plant at work, a few O+ balls came with it. As a test, I crushed it, and there was still plenty in it. That was after 7 months in black diamond blasting sand about 2 inches below the surface of the substrate.

The type of substrate plays a huge role. The more it breathes, the faster it leaches out. Gravel will not last as long. Also, number of plants feeding off it probably make a difference too.
