I'm setting up a new 20gal for my crystals with netlea soil and going to use RO water or RO/tap mix, so I'm not as concerned with the buffering. Is an inch good? Easier to clean and less room for mulm to gather I would assume with less soil. Not planting it, so I don't need 2-3" for roots or anything.

Well with no plants I would still allow for an in and a half to two inches.
