How many interested to setup a planted aquarium club in Chicagoland?

Hey guys,

I moved from Cali to Chicagoland earlier this year and has been looking forward to find out good interest and local clubs focused on aqascaping and planted tanks but have not been able to find a whole lot of activity at a group/club level over here, may be weather, economy, work pressure or whatever but that's my initial impression.

That said, I would like to meet up with local enthusiast in this hobby (and focused on planted tanks specifically) and see if we can setup a club here.

It is a big endeavor and I have no idea what to do, but I am thinking that we can probably meet up at a local pub or starbucks, talk thru it and see where it goes...baby steps you know. May be discuss our interests and experiences (planted tank and outside) and see what kind of mix we can make out of ourselves and how much we can commit ourselves towards setting up a club.

Any interested candidates? I am in nw suburbs and my work life is pretty eratic (including weekends) but I am willing to give it a try. If there are individuals out there, please PM me or reply to this post. I'll contact you and see what we can do.

I'd be down, but I think there is one already, it might not be as active as other clubs.

Yes, I am a member of CAGA but it is mostly email based. Not that much activity. I am hoping if there is more interest among locals to form a community around planted tanks, learn, share etc., then we can probably setup an active community. So are you interested?
I'm in, my schedual is a little hectic. What ever we setup I'd try to make it every time.

Cool. My schedule is hectic too, so we have to do what we can based on the time we can invest. I am planning to be in the GCCA swap meet in Dec. If you guys are interested, we can catch up over there, get to know each other, discuss some plans thoughts and see where it goes.
Count me in. I'm more of a newbie, but would love to meet and learn from folks.
Cool. Don't worry Zinfin. Everybody was a noob at some point. The enthusiam counts, the rest of it you will anyways acquire over time.

I am planning to pay a visit to the GCCA swap meet on Dec 5. vstone and jczernia mentioned that they would like to come over there as well. If you are interested, please PM me. I will try to coordinate it before the event.

Next month is kinda a tight for all the holiday and work together. I am thinking that we can meet during the GCCA event and get to know each other. Then based on everybody's availability we can have a second meeting later in Dec or in Jan. What say?
I am in. I am out in Palatine area now.

I am new and always looking to share advice
I would have some interest in a Chitown group. I would probably even bring in a small amount of java moss or other low light plant for the first meeting as kind of a grab bag or something. I will be at the GCCA event, but I would be hard pressed to say what time I will be attending.
That is a good idea. I will try to attend someday if you do.
Off topic: Anyone know of good FW fish stores in the area? NW Suburbs or near the city?

So far jczernia, Zinfin and myself are confirmed to be there. However times have not yet matched. Let one of us know (PM) what time works for you. BTW, I am thinking of having a separate meeting just between this group and do some plant swaps at that time. But that is up to you all.

That's great hydrophyte. Would love to have you in the pool!
All - some of us are interested to meet up at the GCCA swap meet on Dec 5. However timings are not matching/confirmed yet. I think apart from the swap meet, we should meet separately as well.

Anyways, most of the communication between us is thru PMs only and via me. To open it up a bit, I will be creating a group (I'll name it for now to begin with and then we can decide what our group name should be and change it) and create some discussion threads in it on some of the open questions/suggestions I have heard so far.

I usually go to Aquarium Adventure in Hoffman Estates. That's where somebody suggested me to try out GCCA swaps for cheaper prices and probably higher volumes of some of the fish I was looking for.
