Generally speaking, males are slimmer, have an elongated first ray on the dorsal fin, and the back of the dorsal ends in a point. Like this.

Females are usually deeper bodied, have shorter frontal rays on the dorsal and and the back of the dorsal fin is rounded. Like this. Females aren't always as colorful as the males either, but that's not always the case.

Is the rounding of the dorsal fin reliable in and of itself?

I have 5 rams (sub-adult) and so far one has a distinctinvely sharp rear dorsal. It would be frustrating and surprising as it's only 16% odds.
