How do shrimp react to huge change?

So i've got a 5.5g walstad (dirted) shrimp tank and i think i want to change the substrate. it's too ridiculous to rescape and i have OCS (obsessive compulsive scaping)

I have a 1.5 g to hold them in. If i break down the 5.5, change all substrate, would i need to wait for a cycle? How would i keep the nitrifying bacteria on the filter media alive? can i keep it in a bucket with an airstone? Im gonna need to do this tomorrow because of labor day sale at the LFS.

Depends on the substrate you'll be using. If just sand or gravel, then no cycle. Something like Aqua Soil, then yeah, it will cause a cycle. Shrimp and media in a bucket with an airstone will do just fine.

So if i put in normal sand / gravel, i can just set it up normally with the old filter and just plop the shrimp in?
Yeah as nubster said. I've done that many times
If you have baby shrimp you might lose some when you're replacing the substrate. Just a heads-up.
