Floating plants, screen covers, partially cover the tank with opaque material (sunshield), lotus plants with pads, long leaved plants that flow across the surface, mesh breeder boxes (but it's an eyesore), hardscape that breaches the surface, floating betta logs, plants on suction cups near the surface... I can probably grow this list a bit more but these were the first things that came to mind.

What light do you have? It may be dimmable. As Plinkaploop said you can use a screen cover. You don't have to cover the tank though, you can cover the light. Window screen typically has less than a 70% open layer. That means 1 layer of screen will block about 30% of your light.
