I have a good amount of head room, tank is ~17" tall. Im moving everything over from my 40 breeder to a 30 rimless which has has the same height (17") and depth (17" front to back) just a foot shorter. It will be HEAVILY planted, whats a good depth for my substrate? I don't really need to slope it, maybe just in the very front. Thanks!

2-3" or so. If you plan on having smaller crypts or other smaller foreground plants, I would slope nonetheless, 1.5" in the front to 3 (or so) in the back. That way you don't have too much depth where you don't really need it, and have plenty where your plants will appreciate it.
