It doesn't take root. But you can plant it as if it would. Also, if you take a stem of it and plant it sideways, I've heard it shoots up a big curtain of green. And it grows like a weed.
Thank you for the info. That's interesting how it shoots up when it's planted sideways. I wonder how much sideways to get those really green.

You can propagate hornwort by simply cutting a stem. When you lay a stem horizontally, light from the top reaches all the nodes along the stem with similar intensity. When there is enough light, nodes along the stem will grow buds at around the same time:



Those buds will grow into stems that reach upward. When there is enough buds along a horizontal stem that is down in the water (rather than floating at the top), you will eventually have a curtain.
