My tank is pretty heavily stocked and with water changes the nitrate usually stays around ~20ppm. Do you think it's necessary to dose nitrate and phosphorus? I heard that fish waste and food contributes a good amount of phosphorus.

I am current just dosing seachem flourish for trace, seachem potassium 2-3 a week and excel everyday.

Your plants will ultimately be the deciding factor on that. Research the effects of various nutrient deficiencies and keep a look out for them. You could always reduce water changes and that would allow for a build up of nutrients to insure that you are not removing too many.

This is a really simple picture, but packs a lot of information I think.
